Continuing Education & Professional Development

1. Introduction

The Continuing Education and Professional Development Policy outlines the requirements, opportunities, and responsibilities for Occupational Therapists (OTs) providing virtual consultation services to care homes. This policy ensures compliance with relevant UK laws, regulations, and professional standards governing healthcare practice.

 

2. Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to:

  • Promote ongoing competence and excellence in occupational therapy practice among OTs providing virtual consultation services.

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) and lifelong learning.

  • Support professional growth, skill enhancement, and career advancement for OTs working in virtual care delivery settings.

 

3. Regulatory Compliance

OTs providing virtual consultation services will comply with relevant UK laws, regulations, and professional standards governing continuing education and professional development. This includes:

  • Adhering to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) standards for CPD, which require OTs to maintain and enhance their knowledge, skills, and competence throughout their careers.

  • Complying with any additional requirements or guidelines established by the Royal College of Occupational Therapy (RCOT).

 

4. Continuing Education Requirements

OTs providing virtual consultation services will fulfill continuing education requirements as outlined by the HCPC and the RCOT. This includes:

  • Completing a minimum number of CPD hours annually or within a specified renewal period, as required by the HCPC.

  • Participating in a variety of CPD activities that contribute to professional development, such as formal courses, workshops, conferences, webinars, self-directed learning, and peer-reviewed publications.

  • Documenting CPD activities in a CPD portfolio, including details of the activity, learning objectives, outcomes, and reflection on how the learning has influenced practice.

 

5. Professional Development Opportunities

Care Home OT will support OTs in accessing and participating in a range of professional development opportunities relevant to virtual consultation services. This includes:

  • Providing access to educational resources, training materials, and learning platforms that address topics related to virtual care delivery, telehealth technologies, evidence-based practice, and professional ethics.

  • Facilitating opportunities for OTs to engage in peer learning, mentorship, and knowledge-sharing activities with colleagues, interdisciplinary teams, and external partners.

 

6. Documentation and Record Keeping

OTs will maintain accurate and up-to-date records of their CPD activities, including evidence of participation, completion certificates, and reflections on learning. This includes:

  • Keeping a CPD portfolio or log that documents CPD activities undertaken, including the date, duration, type of activity, and learning outcomes achieved.

  • Retaining supporting documentation for CPD activities, such as certificates of attendance, completion, or participation, as proof of compliance with CPD requirements.

  • Submitting CPD records to the HCPC or other regulatory bodies upon request during audits or renewal processes to demonstrate compliance with CPD requirements.

 

7. Review and Evaluation

Care Home OT will periodically review and evaluate the effectiveness of this Continuing Education and Professional Development Policy to ensure its alignment with regulatory requirements, best practices, and the evolving needs of OTs providing virtual consultation services. This includes:

  • Soliciting feedback from OTs regarding the accessibility, relevance, and effectiveness of professional development opportunities provided by Care Home OT.

  • Monitoring OTs' compliance with CPD requirements and identifying any areas for improvement or additional support.

  • Updating the policy as needed to reflect changes in regulatory requirements, emerging trends in virtual care delivery, and feedback from stakeholders.

 

8. Compliance and Enforcement

Failure to comply with this policy may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment or contractual relationship with Care Home OT.
